The Political Spectrum
A centrist arguing for Liberalism is ideal. Liberals possess values that have the capability to solve problems. Extreme Liberalism, however, often creates more problems than it solves. Conservatives possess values that may lead to an endeavor of power, although this may lead to an absolutely corrupt society. Individuals desire coordination.

John Stuart Mill
Throughout Mill’s persuasive, yet opinionated, piece On Liberty, he stresses the message of gaining absolute power over one's opinions and beliefs before their physical means. After reading through some of this volume posted on “Constitution Society,” the importance of achieving individual liberty may be easily understood by any non-radical person. Therefore, his quote, “over one's mind and over one's body the individual is sovereign,” navigates people towards the fact that an individual can achieve self-liberty through gaining absolute power over their physical and mental figure.
Mill's quote on sovereignty would appear in his volume entitled On Liberty, due to the assertion of the theme in the volume for one to achieve their own defined state of liberty. The quote is stated in the early stages of the volume, therefore serving as a thesis statement. My belief is that Mill uses the quote as his thesis because he wants it to serve as a correlation to his powerful arguments made throughout the volume.
To think of Mill’s statement as a society rather than an individual would result in almost no definite compromise on its true meaning. However, I believe this may be part of what he is attempting to achieve. Self-liberty is to be free within society from authority’s restrictions on one’s own political views, behavior, etc. In short, having control over your own beliefs. If everyone was to follow by the persuasion of power, the world would achieve nothing but a global stalemate. This can be directly linked to his thesis. Mill has the quote on sovereignty inserted into the beginning of his volume in order to cause societal, as well as individual, confliction. To conclude, Mill ingeniously uses the quote as a symbol parallel to our need of self-liberty and political confliction within society.
