The All Important Battle of Social Media
Our present society is being overtaken by the virtual world of the internet, and even more so, social media. People are living two different lives nowadays. There is no longer only physical interaction among the population, but virtual interaction in which people may create any identity they wish. In fact, it has been posted on statista.com that 78% of the American population has some sort of a social media profile. We have gotten to the point where it is strange to not have a virtual identity.
Social Media is defined as "websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking."
The importance of social media throughout the presidential election lays within its definition; the [candidates] are able to create and share whatever content they wish in order to persuade their millions of followers. They may post (or tweet) their views on certain issues, dis the opponents views or arguments, post campaign videos, or in some cases, even propaganda videos or pictures.
Election 2016 has seen the use of social media between the candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, more than ever before.
As seen in the figure below, Trump carries with him 23 million total followers on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, while Hillary carries 15.3 million. Both continue to rapidly gain followers.
